About Betsy

Having started her career in hotel + resort management, it was by chance that Betsy was given a role at one of Australia’s major banks, as part of a new cohort of bank staff working to create a more customer-centric culture from within. With that, she had found her calling in the world of finance!

A number of years (and job titles) later, Betsy is now a qualified Financial Advisor, and still works with banks to help them transform their businesses and ensure they remain relevant and effective in the future. Her passion, however, is helping to improve the financial lives of women, which she does through her financial wellness coaching by helping clients create a nurturing relationship with their money, build the skills to manage it wisely and create a life they love.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got to talking about money?

I really never intended to be someone that talks about money. Really. I thought I would be a fabulous hotelier, a foreign journalist or an archeologist but through various life experience I learned that money is a fundamental part of life and yet is very poorly understood by most and it fascinated me. It was by chance that I found my way into the world of finance but once there I needed to know how it works, why it has so much influence and how to master it. I've been working in finance for over a decade and I still feel like an imposter but I love it. I've worked my way up from teller, home lender, bank manager to being a Private Banker, qualifying as a financial advisor. I also helped to start, license and launch a brand new bank and now I work in technology and innovation for a large bank. What makes my heart sing, however, is being a financial coach, which I do as a side hustle. Helping people to understand and make the most out of their money, to share what I've learnt and help people to create financial wellbeing for themselves. It brings me real joy.

Can you give us three words that come to mind when you think about money?

Tool, Freedom, Fun

In your opinion, why is it important for us, as women, to be talking more about money?

Because it empowers you to do so. For a long time we were excluded from the world of finance. For a long time our interest in the topic was trivialised. For a long time we couldn't own our own money. That is not the case today. As Sallie Krawcheck says, women won't be equal with men until we're financially equal. To do this we need to start by talking about money, learning about money, keeping our money and then multiplying our money so that we can live life on our own terms.

What’s the biggest money ‘faux pas’ you’ve made and how’d you fix it?

Impulse purchases on stuff I don't need or like. To be honest it's still a risk but I've learn to step away from the store, put 24 hours between me and a purchase, take time to do research and simply hit pause. That helps me avoid it... sometimes.

What are your top 2 tips to help more women have conversations about money?

Remember that everyone is learning so never hesitate to ask any question. Asking questions is how you gain more knowledge. My second tip is don't get caught up in what others are doing and just back yourself. Do your research, make your own decision and stick to your plan.
